Elbląg stands at the edge of the Vistula Lagoon, with a reconstructed Old Town of gabled houses after wartime destruction. The star beyond the centre is the Elbląg Canal: a 19th-century waterway famous for rail-mounted inclined planes that carry boats overland between lakes.
From here you are also close to the lagoon shore and the road toward Frombork. The city is a practical gateway between Gdańsk, Warmia, and the north-eastern coast. Give time for both the brick streets and, in season, a canal cruise.
