Gdańsk is a Hanseatic port city on the Motława, rebuilt in brick Gothic after the war and still the heart of the Tri-City. The Royal Way along Długa and Długi Targ leads to Neptune's Fountain, the Main Town Hall, and St. Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world.
On the waterfront the medieval Crane (Żuraw) and granaries face the river, with museums and terraces along the Long Embankment. Westerplatte and the European Solidarity Centre add 20th-century history to the old merchant streets. It is a walkable city: Old Town, islands, and the Baltic beaches of the Tri-City are all close.
